GOLD MEDAL WINNERS & BEST URBAN GARDEN

Yorkshire based garden designer Jamie Dunstan has discovered ‘gold’ in his garden as he claimed his first ever RHS Chelsea Gold Medal and also the accolade of ‘Best in Show’ for the Urban Garden category!

His ‘Winds of Change’ garden sponsored by Stockton Drilling pushed the boundaries of garden design and innovation and judges were delighted to discover unusual features such as a prison door, a Victorian safe, a toilet that doubles as a watering can and a series of fans amongst a creative planting scheme.

“This was just fantastic with its messages of environmental sustainability,” commented Robert Hillier Chair of Small Gardens panel. “Clearly fans on the garden deliver that message loud and clear. As it has an industrial background, I did not expect the high quality of the design; the use of materials, the attention to detail and the colour blending was just magnificent. The planting was great. It is innovative and it certainly deserves to win.”

‘Winds of Change’ was given the Royal seal of approval when Prince Phillip chatted with Jamie and also the President of RHS visited to personally award Jamie with his ‘Best in Show’ accolade. Furthermore, a stream of visitors have enthused over its striking design, use of industrial elements and imaginative planting.

“I also hope that I have inspired visitors to RHS Chelsea as to the creative use of hard landscaping materials together with typical garden plants and features,” said Jamie. “Garden design is about exploring alternative ways of making outdoor spaces work and to have this ethos recognised by the most prestigious show in the world is amazing!”

News update – 11th March 2011

Have had a meeting with S3i who are going to construct the structure in the garden and the frame for the turbines – all went well and am really confident they will look fantastic.

Taken delivery of a prison door which will look great in the garden – definitely a talking point.  I have also found a Victorian safe which I will use for storage think I may repaint it.
